Under the Whippets newly installed spotlight, Downingtown West wrestlers were clearly the stars of the night. The spotlight, courtesy of Downingtown West Wrestling Booster Club, was an added bonus to an evening in which West dominated East to a final score of 52-9. With the win, Downingtown West (4-0 League; 19-3 Season) claims their second consecutive Ches-Mont title.
The match started with Pat May (112) setting the pace. With a quick takedown, two back points and a pin in 51 seconds, Pat set the bench mark for rest of the team. D.J. Evans (119) would answer the call with another pin at 4:49 over Steve Tronel. Jason Scanlon (125) followed by taking command of his bout. Jason quickly scored and controlled Ian Meakim to earn a major decision. In one of the closest matches of the evening, Chris Uhler (130) fought from behind to force overtime. With momentum in his favor, he wasted no time driving into Alex Hydrean for a takedown and the overtime win. Next up was Matt McDonough (135). Matt was relentless, scoring quickly and keeping on the offensive to finish with another major decision. Jake Miller (140) kept up the winning pace with a pin in 2:29 against Josh Kimber. Next up, Steve Rathfon (145), came out with a vengeance using repeated takedowns and releases to tech fall C.J. May. Josh Homer (152) gained the upper hand in the second period of his match against Branden Brainard to finish with another major decision.
The streak of eight straight wins would end with a close decision by East’s Brian Fitzgerald over Chris Kalbach (160). Paul Roseberry (171) kept East from building momentum by aggressively going after Justin Capetola and finishing 11-3. Joe deGarvilla (189) gave a wrestling clinic to David Medearis. With repeated takedowns and back points, Joe easily scored a tech fall. The next two matches, would end with East squeaking out very close decisions. Chris Testa narrowly defeated Nojan Zomorrodian 3-2. Mike Lukenda had his hands full with Alex Bause, narrowly winning in the last seconds 4-3. Rob Akers, determined not to have the Whippets end the evening on a sour note, completely dismantled Joe Linskens, finishing with a 15-0 tech fall.
The night was dedicated to the four graduating seniors, Rob Akers, Paul Roseberry, Joe deGarvilla and Nojan Zomorrodian. Check out the evenings photos by Diane Shannon.
